Endotracheal tube with liquid fillable cuff - mfd from air permeable expanded hydrophobic cellular plastics, pref. PTFE

The cuff which surrounds an endotracheal or tracheotomy tube and is extended into sealing contact with tracheal tissue by filling with liq. e.g. from a syringe or collapsible bag, is made of a material which in the press, of that liq. is permeable to air and non-permeable to the liq. at the normal sealing press. The cuff material is pref. a hydrophobic cellular platic, pref. open-cell expanded PTFE which is heat-sealed to the tube. A liq. surface-effective anaesthestic incorporated in the hydraulic fluid may be passedthrough the cuff wall by temporarily over-pressurising the cuff.
