The spring mattress consists of parts of a side boundary at fixed distances from each other and forming an interspace between then spanned by an elastically extensible spring bridge which forms a support surface for a mattress layer covered by a covering. The spring bridge is of resilient material which is inextensible under loads encountered in use and has longitudinal and transverse extensibility owing to at least 2 transversely aligned spring bridge sections which are individually longitudinally connected by at least one longitudinally extensible corrugation each with the adjoining parts of the spring bridge and transversely connected by at least one transverse extensible corrugation. The bridge has at least one side an upright section directed downward out of the plane of the longitudinally and transversely elastic part of the spring bridge; whose associated sides are supported on associated parts of a frame, with heightwise resilience. The spring bridge can be of cheaper material than the base material.
