The apparatus is for bending a steel plate into any configuration having a compound curved surface. An upper punch group consists of at least three rows of punches aligning widthwise of the plate, disposed above it and adapted to form a curved surface for shaping the plate. A lower punch group consists of at least three rows of punches aligning widthwise of the steel plate and under it. The upper punch group is disposed so that the punches are individually adjustable in height, and the respective punch rows in the rows of punches can be arbitrarily preset in position w.r.t. the relative heights of the rows and the distances between the rows, as is the lower punch group.
