The fabric roof is used for covering of sports grounds and for spectator stands. This roof is readily opened and closed. The fabric panels are tensioned to a minimum extent and the tension or compression springs used accommodate sudden high wind gusts by permitting the roof to flex and they damp out any disturbing flapping. The tensioning springs are connected between the guide rail and the top of the wall. The fabric lower edge is held in the guide rail by means of rollers. The helical spring has an internal length of wire rope which ensures that the spring is not stretched beyond a certain admissible extent. This rope thereby accommodates excessive forces and transmits them to the wall. The edge of the spring cover is held within the channel which is used as a rainwater gutter.
