The damper, e.g. for a wall of a power hammer frame, has resilient plates placed into contact with the wall at opposite sides thereof and secured in position by respective outer plates or rigid material. Bolts passing through the assembly are tightened to place the resilient plates into compression against the sides of the wall. In some cases it is sufficient to provide only one resilient and rigid plate at one side of the wall. In a modification a component, e.g. hammer head, has a bore containing annular resilient elements pressed against the wall of the bore by a screw or taper device.
