Metallic zirconium is mfd by the redn. of zirconium tetrachloride with molten magnesium in a crucible in a redn. appts. The novelty is that after the zirconium sponge has been pptd. in the bottom part of the crucible, the crucible is removed from the redn. appts. and the bottom portion contg. the Zr is cut off the remainder of the crucible; the bottom parts of the crucibles contg. the Zr are then stacked in a vacuum distn. unit so the sponge can be purified by vacuum distn. to remove impurities. In the pref. process, the bottom part of at least two crucibles, obtd. from at least two batches subjected to redn. are placed in the vacuum distn. appts. The major part of both the excess Mg and the MgCl2 arising from the reaction are removed prior to vacuum distn., thus saving time and simplifying the process.
|
