Fire wall elements and fire doors - using asbestos cement panels with inner layers of flexible glass fibre and mica core panels

A wall element for fire protection, e.g. fire doors, has on >=1 side, an outer thin, hard mineral panel (1) pref. of asbestos cement, bext to an inner layer (2) of softer, stronger mineral which is a thermally insulating refractory expanded building material. The inside surface of panel (1) is given a layer of soft elastic material, e.g. woven or non-woven glass fibre, a carbon fibre mat or a glass fibre reinforced carbon fibre mat. The elastic layer is pref. applied to the panel using a binder, esp. a synthetic resin adhesive or cement mortar. The pref. element has a panel (1) on both sides with inner panels of expanded mica plus a filler e.g. a foamed plastic or mineralised, cement-bonded wood shavings. Forms a strong, tough assembly, resistant to impact and cracking and which can be made in a press in a single operation.
