A remotely operating inspection and repair appts. for inaccessible surfaces, esp. of reactor pressure vessels, comprises a support or carriage which moves along a rail hugging the surface of the vessel. The rail may be a toothed belt, or a flexible cord, esp. pretensioned. This carriage may have rollers running on the belt or the vessel surface, and may be composed of a number of articulated sections.
