When steel pipes are joined together by butt welding it is frequently necessary to provide some form of insulating sheath in which to encase the outer surface of the pipe. The insulating sheaths are terminated some distance from the weld. For good insulation in the region of the weld, a plasticised insulating compound is used to complete the seal. The compound is placed between the pipes and plastic foil supported on rollers. A strip of foil is when wrapped around the pipe, such that a suitable overlap with the existing insulating is obtained. The compound spreads evenly around the join to provide an unbroken insulating layer. The foil is secured by adhesive tape while the compound is setting.
