The safety steering column hasa telescopic central shaft enclosed by a tubular housing. The shaft components slide relative to each other and friction force is maintained between them over the whole sliding travel. The outside shaft section which slides on the inside shaft is held on the teeth of the inner shaft by segments pressed against the spline teeth. These segments are formed by cutting slots into the outside shaft section. The friction forces on displacement act only on the flanks of these spline teeth. The enclosing tubular housing consists of a number of tubular sections of different diameters which are pushed together to form a telescopic system.
