The locking catch engages under gravity or by spring action with the ratchet wheel and is released by the electromagnet, or alternatively can be engaged by the electromagnet and released by spring or gravity. The catch is of a ferromagnetic material, and forms part of the magnetic circuit of the electromagnet. The ferromagnetic yoke of the latter, enclosed by the exciter coil, extends into the baseplate of the winch, which is also of ferromagnetic material. The equipment can be so arranged that there is still an air gap between the yoke and the catch when this is in the engaged position. The rear end of the yoke can be screwed, riveted or welded to the winch baseplate, the magnet having a lug at the front end engaging in a hole in the plate.
