1416648 1,2-Diphenyl-ethane derivatives BIOREX LABORATORIES Ltd 11 March 1974 [23 March 1973] 14048/73 Heading C2C Novel compounds of the Formula I wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl or acyl derived from carboxylic acid, X is hydrogen or halogen and R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl radical may be prepared by alkylating a dexoxyanisoin of the formula wherein R<SP>11</SP> is alkyl, with 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl iodide to yield a compound of the formula followed by reaction with an alkyl magnesium iodide to give a carbinol of the formula followed by hydrogenation to yield a compound of the formula optionally followed by dealkylation to give the corresponding 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxbibenzyl which is optionally acylated or etherified at 4,4<SP>1</SP>- positions. Compounds of the Formula I in which X is halogen may also be prepared by halogenation of the corresponding compound in which X is hydrogen. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising at least one compound of the Formula I in admixture with a solid or liquid pharmaceutical diluent or carrier are claimed with oestrogenic activity.
