A continuous casting machine for producing wide sheet or plate comprises a pair of parallel casting rolls and a feed spout for delivering molten metal to the spacing between the rolls. The spout is shaped to conform closely to the roll surfaces and has a wedge-shaped nozzle. A pair of backup rolls are provided one either side of the casting rolls to prevent the latter from bowing apart under pressure from the solidified metal passing between the casting rolls. The machine is tiltable so that it can be started up in an upwardly or horizontal casting mode and then hanged to a downwardly casting mode.
