1,191,077. Coating plastic surfaces with metal; electro-plating. MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO. Ltd. Sept.27, 1968 [Sept. 30, 1967; June 17, 1968], No.45996/68. Heading C7B and C7F. A metal-plated polypropylene article is made by treating a surface of a polypropylene composition containing 20-50% by weight of an inorganic powder, e.g. kieselguhr, CaCO 3 , BaCO 3 , Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , BaSO 4 . MgSO 4 , SrSO 4 and/or CaSO 4 , having an average particle size of less than 20 microns with an acid solution containing an oxidizing agent, e.g. CrO 3 and H 2 SO 4 solution at 50-90‹ C. for 10-60 minutes, then metal-plating, preferably by a chemical plating process (e.g. using CuSo 4 -Rochelle salt-formalin reduction solutions) followed by an electroplating process (e.g. using CusO 4 -H 2 SO 4 bath). Alternatively, the surface may be degreased, then etched, sensitized and/or activated. Thus prior to plating, the acid-treated surface may be immersed in an aqueous HCl solution containing SnCl 2 , then in one containing PdCl 2 . An example specifies a chemically Cu-plated article subjected to electroplating first in a Cu pyrophosphate-K 2 oxalateammonia bath, then in a CuSO 4 -H 2 SO 4 bath, then in NiSO 4 - NiCl 2 - H 3 BO 3 bath, and finally in a CrO 3 -H 2 SO 4 bath.
|
