Deep pile carpets are printed with a multi-colour pattern in that the preliminary fixing of the ink at the tip of the pile is effected by blowing satd. steam through the carpet backing and spreading the ink along the pile to the roots by forcing the ink wetting agents using at least gravitational forces. Running of ink at the tip is prevented and the pile is uniformly coloured along its whole depth.
