In a method for removing oxygen from receivers in heat treatment furnaces, the receiver is evacuated to a press. of 10-1 Torr whilst cold, and the protective gas is allowed to flow into the evacuated receiver. The method is quicker and requires less protective gas than oxygen displacement through purging with protective gas at atmospheric press., which may take 2 1/2 hours.
