The light beam is directed at the cross-section of the web etc., and a detector responds to the part of the beam reflected back by the surface of the cross-section. The cross-section is scanned by deflecting the orientation of the light source and/or detector, so as to obtain the coordinates of the periphery of the cross-section, these being used to obtain its shape and dimension.
