Oil dip stick for vehicle IC engine - has upper and lower level detectors for automatic electric indication

The dipstick (12) is inserted through a hole in the top of the sump. It is hollow and contains plate electrodes or similar detectors (10, 11) within it. Grooves (25) in the dipstick locate these. The dipstick has a handle (13) and a flexible electric lead (27) to a battery source of voltage and the indicator. The supply is connected by means of a press switch only when the oil level is to be checked. The signals from the two detectors are taken through end gates and a switching network to an indicator panel with three differently coloured lamps which are energised to indicate low, normal and excessively high level according to whether neither, one or both detectors are below the oil line.
