The device for placing intermediate layers of boards on stacks of boards during stacking and for taking the intermediate layers from the board stacks includes a layer positioning station and a layer removing station and a transport carriage (12) moving a track (11) positioned above and between the positioning station (3) and removing station (9). From the transport carriage (12) is suspended a vertically adjustable grab (13) with downwards projecting grab link (14) for holding the intermediate layers (4). Below the track (11) between the positioning station (3) and the removing station (9) is located a storage station (15) for the intermediate layers (4) consisting of a vertically movable table (16).
