The ship is for the transport of items such as lighters and pontoons, which are partly supported in it by their own upwards pressure, an appreciable part of this pressure being transmitted to the ship during the voyage. Its hull has a bottom plate with a non-flexible underwater load supporting and hull stiffening assembly, ballast tanks along the sides, and an internal hold for the load, apertures being provided in the bottom plate so that water can flow freely in and out, the hold thus being always submerged. Trim and draught are controlled by the amount of water in the ballast tanks, and a sluice gate is provided in the hull for the loading and unloading by floating the lighters etc. in and out. These are secured detachably to the underwater load supporting assembly by their upper parts, so that their buoyancy helps to sustain the weight of the ship. |
