Low wind noise tailgate for car - with lip in front of groove to deflect slipstream

The vehicle is fitted with a tailgate (3) which extends over the width of the rear body and has its edges pressed into forward facing lips (5). The sides of the car body (1) are pressed outwards into a lip (6) in front of the tailgate so that the slip-stream is deflected away from the slot between the body and the tailgate. The deflecting lip ensures that there is no wind noise due to the slot, especially with wide manufacturing tolerances in the fitting of the tailgate. An alternative solution has a specially profiled strip secured as a lip in front of the slot, with the strip serving as a rain gutter.
