Casting having white cast iron external zones - chill cast from super-eutectic alloy contg. carbon, silicon and manganese

Castings, esp cam shafts, having white-solidified hard external zones are produced in a metal chill by using a super-eutectic cast iron alloy contg. 3.6-3.9% C, 1.6-2.1% Si, 0.1-0.3% Mn. Content of impurities, e.g. S, P, Cr, Ti, should be as low as possible with a total =0.2%. A thin, uniform carbide skin-like zone is formed round whole of casting, without impairing its mech. props.
