A self-adjusting guide for centering long workpieces of variable widths comprises a baseplate and cover plate secured to it and a pair of fixed guide elements clamped between these two plates and having converging inner edges which define a wedge-shaped passage in the space between the two plates; inside this wedge-shaped passage, two slidable guide elements have converging outer edges which slide along the converging inner edges of the fixed guide elements, so that a change in their longitudinal position relative to the fixed elements provides a parallel-sided passage of variable width between them for the workpiece. A bolt, passing through the baseplate and cover plate, maintains the slidable guide elements symmetrical about the centre line. Tension springs (attached to brackets), esp. helical springs, bias the slidable guide elements towards the narrow end, holding them in posn. when the workpiece is withdrawn. The pref. taper of the passage is 10 degrees each side, i.e. 20 degrees. The guide is used for holding a metal or plastics workpiece for machining. Simple and automatic adjustment to the width is obtd. Alignment is positive.
|
