Cooling and drying box for metal strip - to sharply cool the strip during rolling

Device for providing intense cooling during rolling of a metal strip comprises one after the other, (a) an entry box comprising in which the strip is water cooled and (b) an air drying box; having devices for removing water from the strip. More spec., the entry box has two distinct parts, the first has a wide mouth of gradually decreasing height, and is fed with water from entry just below the roof of the mouth and projecting the water at high velocity into the entry box in the forward (rolling) direction. The roof angle changes to horizontal in the second part of the entry box at a point immediately above a roller the upper part of which is inside the box. The floor of the box in both parts is inclined slightly towards the roller. The box has increased cooling efficiency, is suitable for any width metal strip and will accept metal strips with flatness defects.
