Root crops are precleaned mechanically to remove earth without damaging the skins, then cleaned completely in equipment which removes unwanted projections as well as washing them. The storage life of the vegetables is increased. The cutters have a longe rlife as earth is removed in the precleaning before they contact the vegetables.
