PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing nitric acid with which the optimization of nitric acid production is attained under the improvement of production parameters and material- and energy balance at the time of averting or reducing the drawback of the prior art. SOLUTION: This process comprises producing the nitric acid by a two-stage compression method of executing the combustion of ammonia to be used by a compressed process gas under a low first pressure, subjecting the gaseous nitrose generated by this combustion to absorb at least part of water under a second pressure relatively higher than the first pressure, thereby generating the nitric acid and releasing the unabsorbed residual gas from the second pressure with a residual gas expanding device 15 in order to obtain a compressor operation. In such a case, the process air and the gaseous nitrose are separately blown to a plural shaft power transmission type turbocompressor 19 and at this time, the process air is compressed to the first pressure described above and the gaseous nitrose is compressed to the second pressure described above.
