The bone or part to be cut is encompassed by a fastening clamp and the actual cutter. The amputation or other surgical operation is performed by a horizontally vibrating cutting disc and a vertical force applied by the operator. Preferably the clamp and the housing (1) can be coupled together such that the cutting knife cannot pass over the outer circumference of the clamp (3). Friction surfaces (7) and spacer pins (2) limit the cutting depth. The cutting knife is interchangeable and can be selected according to the diameter of the bone. A recess (6) in the housing (1) permits simple regulation of the vertical force and a guard (8) is provided for the knife. The knife (4) and clamp (3) can be sterilized or used as disposable parts and are packed in a plastic sack to ensure sterile condition.
