1513390 Article carriers ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 26 Sept 1975 [9 Dec 1974] 39480/75 Heading B8C [Also in Division B5] A method of making a carrier for a plurality of articles, such as cans and bottles, comprises extruding a tubular structure having integral radially outwardly projecting ribs, such as first ribs 32a or 32b and second ribs 34a or 34b, which extend longitudinally of the structure, and transversely slitting the structure so that alternate first and second slits, 36a and 38a or 36b and 38b leave unsevered said second and first ribs, respectively. The severed tubular structure can be unfolded to provide carriers, such as shown in Fig. 6. The tubular structure may be of thin walled construction, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and in such embodiments may comprise any number of tube sections 16a, e.g. one, two, three or six tube sections. The thin walled tube sections are connected to one another by webs, such as 56, and in one embodiment Figs. 13 and 14 (not shown) by handle forming webs (68, 70), which webs 56, (68, 70) are completely cut through during the severing operation. In alternative embodiments, such as shown in Fig. 8, the tubular structure may be composed of thick walled tubular sections. These latter embodiments are also provided with finger hold forming openings, such as 64, 66, and article receiving apertures may be circular, as shown, or oblong or elliptical, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown). |
