The manipulator for industrial handling purposes can be readily adapted to given purposes. The manipulator has relatively simple design and it can be readily adapted to given purposes so that the manipulator and its associated actuator are still readily serviced and maintained. The working section has an arm (B) and a number of adjusting units for moving the working section about an axis of linearly. These adjusting units have connecting arrangements which can be interchanged. Hence the manipulator can be built up for a given purpose and those adjusting units which are not needed can be dismantled and the working section can be combined with one or more adjusting units on a fixed foundation.
