1484086 Olefin polymerization catalysts SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 9 June 1976 [11 June 1975 26 Nov 1975] 25016/75 Heading C3P [Also in Division C1] Olefins are polymerized in the presence of violet TiCl 3 as catalyst together with a dialkyl aluminium halide as activator, said violet TiCl 3 being made by heating brown TiCl 3 in the presence of a halogenated aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon (see Division C1). If desired, before polymerization, the violet TiCl 3 together with some or all of the activator may be prepolymerized with a small amount of the olefin. The process is particularly applicable to the homopolymerization of propylene and the copolymerization of ethylene and propylene. The polymerization is typically carried out in an inert liquid, in the vapour phase or in the liquid olefin monomer, In the examples TiCl 4 is reduced with triethyl aluminium, heated with nbutyl- or n-octyl-chloride or CCl 4 and n-ootylchloride and used with diethyl aluminium chloride to polymerize propylene in n-octane in the presence of hydrogen. |
