The invention comprises novel benzamides of the formula where R is allyl or propargyl; R 1 is H or C 1-5 alkyl; R 2 is C 1-5 alkyl, C 2-5 alkenyl or C 3-6 cycloalkyl, or R 1 and R 2 together with the N atom to which they are attached form a pyrrolidino, piperidino or morpholino radical; R 5 and R 6 are each H or C 1-5 alkyl and, when R 5 and R 6 are both alkyl they are the same; and at least one of R 3 and R 4 is H, the other being H, Cl or CH 3 ; and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts. The compounds of the above formula in which both R 5 and R 6 are H are prepared by hydrolysing the corresponding 5- acetamide derivatives; compounds in which R 5 is H and R 6 is C 1-5 alkyl are obtained by alkylating the corresponding 5-acetamido derivatives and hydrolysing the resulting alkylated products; and compounds in which R 5 and R 6 are the same C 1-5 alkyl are produced by alkylating the corresponding compounds of the above formula in which R 5 and R 6 are H. N - (n - Butyl) - 2 - allyloxy - 5 - (N - methylacetamido) benzamide is obtained by treating N- (n - butyl) - 2 - allyloxy - 5 - acetamidobenzamide with sodium hydride and methyl iodide. Pharmaceutical compositions, suitable for oral administration and having muscle relaxing and anti-inflammatory activities, contain the above novel compounds or therapeutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof and pharmaceutical carriers. |
