The blade sharpener is for use on a cutting appts. having a cutting blade which translates through spread sheet material in a cutting operation. The cutting blade is mounted on a platform positioned above a support surface on which the sheet material is held and is moved toward and away from the support surface to bring the cutting blade into or out of cutting engagement with the sheet material. The cutting blade is pref. a reciprocating blade suspended from the platform for rotation about an axis perpendicular to the support surface. During a cutting operation, the blade is translated through the sheet material and is oriented about the perpendicular axis to remain tangent to the cutting path at each point. The cutting blade is also mounted on the tool platform.
