A reduction catalyst for removing nitrogen oxides from exhaust gases is made from tufa as a support material and vanadium or a vanadium compound. Vanadium or its compounds can be employed on their own or together with metals of groups Ib, IIb or VIII of the Periodic Table of the Elements, or chromium or manganese or compounds thereof.
