A suitable time intervals is first derived on the basis of a relevance criterium dependent on the reduction of information. A relevance signal is derived from the frequency distribution of the amplitudes of the suitable transformed source signals. The selection of relevant sampled values from the delayed and if necessary transformed source signals then controls the time intervals. Portions of the signal which may be regarded as of low importance, in particular signals which differ only slightly from previous signals, are suppressed, and the remainder of the signal can be transmission through the available channel.
