The lift or vibrating roller (4) of a printing machine inking mechanism transfers the ink from the ductor roller (2) to a friction roller (5) and has a drive unit which ensures that optimum control is possible even at minimum inking levels. A differential control gear is connected in series with the drive cam of the vibrating roller for driving and adjusting the phase position relative to the machine cycle. A carrier gear rotatably positioned on a shaft incorporates a double axle supporting a drive-in gear and a drive-out gear. The drive-out gear meshes with a driven gear which is rotatably positioned on the shaft and is rigidly coupled with the drive cam of the vibrating roller.
