The winding machine consists of a frame on which a rotating drum (4) with motor drive is mounted. A strip of metal which is rolled into a spiral on the drum is fixed with a pin to a flange on the drum. The strip material is bent in the plane of the width of its rectangular section and is made from special steel. The strip is wound tightly on the drum, using two rollers (6, 16) which are guided by screw spindles so that the strip is wound in the form of a sprial. The spiral is stretched along its axis till it has the required length and is in the shape of a coil spring.
