Glass filament producing appts. comprises a melting receptacle connected to an apertured feeder and an attenuator in which the glass batch matl. is melted in the receptacle by a series of adjacent parallel tubular electrical heating elements extending across the receptacle beneath the melt. Each heating element comprises two parallel longitudinal sections joined at the ends e.g. in the shape of an ellipse or race track and each tubular element contains a refractory matl. e.g. Al2O3. The heating elements are such as to increase the melting capacity of the appts. without increasing its size and more uniform heating is effected.
