The original water is led over >=1 acid cation exchangers and the stream is then split into two parts. One part is led through a trickle column in counterflow with a constant volume of air, which gives complete removal of all the free CO2 present. The other partial stream, which is acid and contains at least CO2, is led to a vessel (I) together with satd. lime water of a constant concn. The resulting carbonate soln. is added in the required amt. to the effluent from the trickle column. The vessel (I) is constructed in the form of a funnel whose rim is sealed to the inner wall of the trickle column. A vat is situated centrally beneath the funnel, having a larger dia. than the dia. of the funnel outlet. The leads from the lime water saturation unit and the cation exchanger feed in just above the funnel. (I) is made in the form of a funnel to overcome problems of blocking of the tubes, which were encountered in previous designs.
