Large-capacity steam generator with cylindrical shell has a lateral gas inlet and top outlet. A number of steam generator sections, pref. four, are arranged around a central vertical gas channel, each section consisting of superimposed zig-zag tube nests. The secions may be contained in hexagonal housings and may be releasably interconnected by vertical flanges. They may be interconnected so as to form an octagonal assembly. The central channel may have a rectangular, pref. square, cross-section and may contain a vertical hot gas tube connected to the lateral inlet.
