Vertical illumination system for binocular stereo-microscopes - has paired right and left lenses, eyepieces, light sources and mirrors

The vertical illumination system has a pair of left and right polarisers (13) which are positioned between the light sources and semi-transparent mirrors. A pair of right and left analysers (18) are places between the mirrors and the eyepieces. The polarisers are arranged so that they have parallel directions of oscillation and the analysers are positioned so that they have direction of oscillation perpendicular to those of the polarisers. A pair of right and left quarter wave plates (16) is placed between the objective lenses (15) and the specimen, so that their optical axes are at 45 deg. to the directions of oscillation of the polarisers.
