Antimicrobial compounds are disclosed having the formula Z-B-Y-B-Z wherein B is carbamylguanidino or thiocarbamylguanidino; Y is a bivalent hydrocarbon radical which can be aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic or a combination of aliphatic with alicyclic or aromatic; and Z can represent a number of groups such as alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxyalkyl, aryloxyalkyl, alkylthioalkyl or phenylthioalkyl.
