Regenerating partially or completely deactivated HSO3F catalyst used in the alkylation of paraffin and olefins and contg. organic sludge formed during the alkylation process by (a) contacting the separated catalyst phase with water to convert at least part of the HSO3F to HF and H2SO4 (b) removing at least part of the HF from the mixt. by contacting it with a liquid phase (II) contg. H2SO4 and sludge, (c) cooling (Ie with liquid paraffin to form a liquid pahse (II) contg. HSO3F and a vapour phase (IV) contg. HSO3F, HF and paraffin, (d) contacting (III) and (IV) with SO3 dissolved in a liquid stream of HSO3F flowing counter-current to the flow of (IV) such taht the HF undergoes a substantially liquid-phase reaction with the SO3 to from a liquid phase (V), by regenerated HSO3F and a gas phase (VI) contg. paraffin with minor amts. of HSO3F, (e) cooling (VI) to condense the HSO3F from it and obtain a liquid phase (II) contg. predominantly HSO3F and a gas phase (VIII) contg. substantially pure paraffin, and (f) using at least part of (VII) as the countercurrently flowing HSO3F stream in step. (d).
