One or several straight pipes (1), are placed close together, in contact with a straight electric heating conductor tape (2). A thin metal foil strap (6) is then wound around the heating element (2) and the pipe (1) to produce a helical overwrap. The metal strap (6) increases the efficiency and the uniformity of the heat transfer between the heating tape (2) and the pipes (1). Two layers (3, 4) of insulating material, such as glass and synthetic fibres, and an outer skin (5) of protective plastics complete the assembly. The synthetic material is made of thermally stabilised PVC, modified polyethylene of high density or polychlorpropene or polyurethane.
