A method of manufacturing toluene diamine from crude dinitrotoluene containing acid together with inter alia nitrophenolic material characterized in that it comprises the steps of washing said crude dinitrotoluene with water until the concentration of acid in the crude dinitrotoluene is less than 6000 ppm (by weight) (based on HNO3), and reacting the washed crude dinitrotoluene with hydrogen in a reactor in the presence of a catalyst without any intermediate step to reduce the concentration of nitrophenolic material present.
