Dentifrice compsns. comprise a chewable base material contg. abrasive particles with a particle size of 0.1-100 mu m, opt. together with surfactants, anticariogenic agents and conventional additives. Regular use of the compsns. is stated to satisfy the requirements of everyday oral hygiene. The abrasive particles can comprise inorganic and/or organic materials and are pref. present in an amt. of 0.1-20 wt.%. Suitable materials include CaCO3, Ca phosphates, Ca lactate, CaSO4, Al(OH)3, Al2O3, MgO, Mg(OH)2, Mg trisilicate or pyrophosphate, SiO2, and indigestible polysaccharides (esp. ground cellulosic components of cereal grains).
