The vehicle engine incorporates a sensor responsive to knocking of the engine, with the signal from the sensor used to delay the ignition point for the fuel-air mixt. The fuel-air mixt. is also enriched to counteract the knocking. This mixt. enrichment is pref. only carried out during adjustment of the ignition timing in response to the sensor signal. Pref. the sensor supplies pulses to a device for controlling the ignition timing and to a device for lengthening the duration of the fuel inspection pulses controlling the individual fuel injection valves for each engine cylinder.
