Joint between silencer end cap and outlet pipe - is achieved by forming ridges with expanding mandrel

The end cap (12) of ther silencer body (10) has a central hole with an inwardly projecting flange (15) with a curved contour. The inlet or outlet pipe (13) passes through this central hole and is retained by forming ridges (17) on either side of the flange (15). These ridges (17) are formed by an expanding material inserted into the bore of the pipe (13). This method of assembly is cheaper than the usual welded joint which also has the disadvantage of being liable to fail due to the engine induced vibration.
