摘要
1,249,756. Finishing fabrics; non-woven fabrics; pile fabrics. BIGELOW-SANFORD Inc. 24 April, 1970 [14 Aug., 1969], No. 19823/70. Headings D1K, D1R and D1S. A tufted pile fabric is made by (a) providing a backing fabric 4 comprising a needled web of intermixed textile fibres the majority of which are of a heat-shrinkable synthetic thermoplastic material, the exposed fibres on at least one exterior surface being bonded together, the fabric 4 having a plurality of spaced pile yarns 3 extending therethrough at spaced points along each yarn to provide a plurality of pile elements upstanding in rows from one face of the fabric 4, and (b) shrinking the fabric 4 by continuously moving itin a direction lengthwise of the pile yarns 3 through a heating zone 26 to heat the shrinkable fibres to a temperature above their shrinking temperature but not above their fusion temperature, while substantially inhibiting lengthwise shrinkage of the fabric 4 and controlling the shrinkage of the fabric 4 in the transverse direction. Preferably, the backing fabric 4 is formed by the distribution of fibres, e.g. polypropylene fibres, by garnets in one or more superimposed layers on a carrier, e.g. a low-count cotton cheese cloth, preferably, with the fibres extending predominantly transversely of the web, and this assembly is needled with barbed needles to force some of the fibres through the open mesh of the cheesecloth. After needling, the fibres on one or both exterior surfaces are heat bonded by contact with rollers, e.g. heated to 325-350‹F. The fibres of the backing may be polypropylene or a mixture of polypropylene with nylon, rayon or acrylic fibres, or polyesters, or mixtures thereof. In place of cheesecloth, there may be provided a layer of longitudinally extending polyester filaments 64, Fig. 3, threads or yarns or a layer of an oriented plastics film, e.g. polypropylene, which is fibrillated by the needling operation. The pile yams 3 are formed on the fabric 4 by a tufting machine having reciprocating needles. As shown in Fig. 1, a tufted pile carpet fabric 2, produced as above-described, is supplied from a roll 6 having pins or spikes 7 thereon to prevent slippage of the fabric and passes over a guide roll 10. The opposite edges of the fabric 2 are engaged by pins 16 on tenter chains 12, 14, rotary brushes 22, 24 being provided to impale the fabric on the pins. The chains 12, 14 guide the fabric through a heating chamber 26 heated by steam circulating coils (28), Fig. 2 (not shown), e.g. to a temperature of 315-320‹F, and constrain each of the edges to move along a fixed line inclined towards the middle of the fabric 2. Guide rolls 18, 20, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 48, 52, 50, 54 for the chains 12, 14 are provided. Adjacent the exit of the chamber 26, the fabric 2 is engaged by a spiked roll 56 and is re-wound on a roll 60.
