In order to bake coils having a thermoplastic synthetic material sheath, a current surge is fed at a constant voltage through the coil which is correspondingly made contact with. The baking quality depends to a very large extent on the coil geometry, the heat dissipation on the coil and making contact with the coil wire ends. In order to obtain a uniform baking quality, in the case of the method according to the invention, the coil is heated by a plurality of heating current pulses, as a function of the heating of the coil. By means of the heating current (16), which is pulsed as a function of temperature, the coil can be baked for any desired length of time using the temperature response (15) which is optimum for it, to be precise distributed over the entire coil cross-section. <IMAGE>
