2-(Substd. methoxy) 4-(p-trifluoromethylphenoxy) nitrobenzene derivs. of formula (I) and, when Z is COOH, their salts are new: (X is H, halogen, CF3, 1-4C alkyl, CN or NO2; Y is H, halogen or CF3; W is O, S, SO or SO2; R is 1-4C alkyl, Ph-(1-4C)alkyl, Ph opt. substd. by halogen or CF3; Q is (CH2)n or 2-6C alkenylene; n is 0-4; Z is COOR', COOH, COO ion, CONH2, CONHR', COSR', CONR'R', CN, CH2OH, CH2Cl, COR', CH2OMe, COO(CR2R3)mCOOR' or OR'; m is not defined; R' is 1-4C alkyl, 3-6C alkenyl, cyano-(1-4C)alkyl, 3-6C alkynyl, 2-4C haloalkyl, 1-4C hydroxyalkyl, (1-4C)alkoxy-(1-4C)alkyl, (1-4C)alkoxy-(1-4C)alkoxy-(1-4C)alkyl, trifluoroethyl, 2-4C nitroalkyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl or Ph-(1-4C)alkyl; and R2 and R3 are H or Me, the -CR2R3- gps. being the same or different when m is greater than 1).. Cpds. (I) are pre- and post-emergence herbicides, esp. useful for post-emergence use in soyabean, peanut, cotton, safflower, rape, sugar beet, wheat, barley, oats, rice, etc. Applied at 0.0056-5.6 kg/ha.
